Dortmund Mayor Thomas Westphal visits the global research and development service provider Taros Chemicals again after 2014
Dortmund, December 2022 ++++
High-ranking visit to the global chemical research and development service provider Taros Chemicals at the BiomedizinZentrumDortmund at the end of 2022. In light of the strong corporate growth of Taros Chemicals in recent years and considering the further expansion plans for the coming years, Lord Mayor Thomas Westphal gladly accepted the invitation of the high-tech company from the pharmaceutical and chemical sector to have an update discussion. Indeed, the mayor of Dortmund was already a guest at Taros Chemicals in 2014. Back that time, Mr Westphal visited Taros Chemicals in the position of head of the Dortmund Economic Development Agency on the occasion of the celebrations for the 15th company anniversary and the EU funding project “European Lead Factory” (total volume EUR 196 M) co-acquired by Taros Chemicals, which was able to give drug research at the Dortmund location a significant boost. Taros is also involved in the Dortmund drug discovery initiative Drug Discovery Hub Dortmund (DDHD), which is funded with EUR 11 M by the NRW research infrastructure program from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
In addition to Lord Mayor Westphal, the Managing Director of Dortmund Economic Development Agency, Heike Marzen, and Horst-Günter Nehm, Head of the Special Assets at the TechnologieZentrum, were also involved in the discussion. The city’s strategy for the future development of the technology and science campus Dortmund is of crucial importance for a medium-sized, fast-growing company like Taros Chemicals to remain globally competitive. Therefore, a review at the strong growth of the past years as well as the further expansion prospects in Dortmund, also under the currently challenging general conditions, was the subject of the good discussions with the Taros Chemicals’ management.

“The current times are of course primarily characterized by discussions about the supply of energy and raw materials, which also affects us as an energy-intensive company with a laboratory research operation. So, I am more than pleased that Mr. Westphal, as mayor, and also Ms. Marzen and Mr. Nehm, are following the concerns of medium-sized companies such as Taros and are supporting our efforts to secure the site and the planned expansion in the coming years within the scope of the possibilities of the city of Dortmund want to achieve” Dr. Dimitrios Tzalis (Managing Partner) is commenting.
Taros Chemicals was founded in Marburg with 3 employees in 1999 and relocated its company headquarters to the BiomedizinZentrumDortmund in 2004. In the meantime, Taros Chemicals employs around 70 people, mainly in chemical laboratories, who do research on innovative technologies and applications on behalf of global corporations. Taros Chemicals is one of the largest tenants at TechnologieZentrumDortmund. Due to the demanding customer projects including a high proportion of research, almost two-thirds of the employees have completed a PhD in chemistry.
